Bad Dreams

I wrote this post a while back on a different blog, and now my son is having bad dreams as well, so I thought I would share the post here.

It was around 11:30pm and I had just drifted off to sleep when, I was awaken by the blood curdling screams of my child. "No, No, don't get me", He cried. I was finally able to get him to wake up and calmed him down enough to tell me what was going on. He said that "They" were coming to get him. I could not make anymore sense of it than that. He could not tell me who, or why, or how, just that they were coming. As a mother I longed to ease his fears and chose to have him sleep in my room. The next night he was once again waking. This time he was crying saying that bugs were all over him. These dreams continued night after night. All the while I was feeling more and more helpless. I began to search my mommy boards and discovered that bad dreams are very common in children. They are just learning of the "Fears" of the world and have not yet learned how to cope. This did not set well, with me.

The Bible says, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." II Timothy 1:7
This scripture was brought to my heart over and over that day. I sat down and looked up scriptures on fear. As I began to read the countless scriptures, my heart was quickened to pray over my child. Each time he rose I was to pray over him. As I went throughout my day I began to quote these scriptures. I began to pray them for my child. Every night when we say our 'night, night, prayers we pray about our dreams. And I, quote scripture.

I do not believe that we have to live a life of fear. I do not believe that we have to accept that fear is a normal part of childhood. I believe that it is time we stood up for our children in our prayer time, and begin to intentionally pray against bad dreams. Through prayer and scripture we can begin to teach our children about God's protection.

Here are several scriptures on fear that I have found helpful in my prayer time.

Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

I John 4:18 There is not fear in love: but perfect love casteth out fear; because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Psalm 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91:4-7 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shall thou trust; his trust shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

Psalm 91:10-11 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Proverbs 3:25-26 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

Isaiah 54:14 In righteousness shalt thou be established; thou shalt be far from oppression; thou shalt not fear; and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.

Psalm 56:11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me

Psalm 23:4-5 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; they rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Psalm 27:1-3 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Through a host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war should rise up against me, in this will I be confident.

Hebrews 13:6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

We have dealt with bad dreams and night terrors at our house as well. My 10 year old began to be scared to go to sleep because he didn't want to have bad dreams so I prayed with him before bed. Now he ask me to pray for his dreams before bed every night. I love that he has seen the power of prayer for himself through these bad dreams.
