Patching

A few posts back I bragged about how good Christopher was doing with his glasses. Well, I wanted to brag on Hailey a bit. Do you see that eye patch she is wearing? She wears on full time. Morning to night. I can't even imagine what it is like using only one eye. She did fuss about them to begin with but about three months in we got those cute ones from Patchpals.com and she has been great about them. We have been patching full time for one year and Hailey has been such an angel about it. I'm so proud of her!

Patch Pals

I was recently asked by a reader about Hailey Bug's eye patch. I thought this would be a great opportunity to share our patching story as well as do a review for Patch Pals.

Hailey Bug has always had poor eye sight. In fact I have at times been told that she was going blind. When she came to live with us she had huge bottle top glasses that you could see from miles away. We were told by her previous placement that she was patching her good eye for 3 hours a day. At the time we had no clue why. We later found out that she had several eye problems but that the ones causing the need for patching were called, Amblyopia and Lazy Eye.

This last time we went to the eye Dr. her eyes had gotten worse. The Dr. Said that we needed to be patching her eye anytime she was not doing school work. Patching is very emotional for a child and Hailey Bug had begun throwing fits about patching. It broke my heart so I set out to find a better way. That's when I found Patch Pals.

Patch Pals has a wide variety of over the glasses patches. Hailey Bug is wearing one in her picture. This website also offers a lot of motivational and emotionally encouraging things for both parent and child. First once the child joins the patch pals team you can get them a t-shirt, a bracelet, an I.D tag Necklace and a membership card to show their Friends ($25). The slogan used for this site it "Patching Makes My Eyes Stronger." The kids can also view photo's of other children wearing the patch. The kids can enter what is called Patch Land where there are many different activities the kids can do all centered around boosting the child's self esteem when it comes to patching. They also have A lot of useful information for parents as well as encouragement. I went on the site and let Hailey Bug choose the patches she wanted. She was so excited when they came in the mail and we have not had any battles over patching since they arrived. If you or someone you know has a child that patches Please let them know about this site. It really is an incredible ministry to these children's lives. Also check it out yourself you may gain a bit of information that you may find useful when encouraging a friend.
