Fighting the Tube

Summer is in full swing. We all make summer plans, and have great intentions, but It’s often hard to fight the tube. A large number of children spend hours a day in front of the TV. It’s easy as parents to use it as a babysitter. I was talking with someone about this the other day and their question to me `was, “If they aren’t watching TV, what do you do with them?” That’s a great question. I thought I would make a list of a few things that could be done. (Here you go this is for you! You know who you are LOL!)

  • Send them outside to ride their bikes
  • Teach them to ride their bikes without training wheels
  • Plan a daily craft
  • Participate in Library Activities
  • Sign them up for reading programs. Then they will have to make time to read!
  • Read aloud to them 20 minutes a day
  • Go to the Park
  • Visit the local Art Museum
  • Plan play dates
  • Go on vacation
  • Go hiking
  • Blow bubbles
  • Set up play centers at home
  • Do science experiments
  • Send them to camp
  • Vacation Bible School
  • Plant a Garden
  • Make your children responsible for tending the garden
  • Get a dog, and get him trained
  • Get a pet of any kind, and teach your children to care for it
  • Play board games
  • Put together a puzzle as a family
  • Let them help you cook
  • Include them in chore time
  • Put on a play
  • Teach them to play the piano
  • Sports
  • Send them outside for free play
  • Go to church events
  • Do those unit studies you wanted to do but never had time for
  • Let them color
  • Let them paint
  • Have devotion time
  • Tour your city like you are a visitor
  • Send them to Grandma :)
  • Create an incentive program where the kids have to earn tube time. (make it fun)
  • Last but not least, JUST SAY NO!!!!!!!

Confession: I was able to write this post because, my kids were watching Umi Zoomi. LOL!!!

Good Morning! Great post. It is a daily struggle. I usually let them watch some Disney shows in the morning and get it out of their systems- ages 9 amd 7. Then we turn the tube off and the creativity just flourishes. They write, they create puppets, they draw fashions and so on....
