The Heart Behind Jacks Academy

The word Academy has several different meanings, all focused on the primes of learning. When I changed the name of this blog to  Jacks Academy I had put a lot of thought behind the name, but I never got around to writing up this post. I love to blog, to write, to preserve memories. Ironically my life has been super busy, and my blogging has simply been an after thought. However, as I was going through reading the blogs I frequent, I was suddenly struck once again with thought about why I chose the name I chose for this blog and what it means to me. It seems natural that I would choose this name since this blog is primarily focused on Homeschooling, but homeschooling for us is so much more than book work.

It’s life. It’s love. It’s quality time spend. It’s therapy. It’s play. It’s strengthening our relationship with the Lord. It’s life skills. It’s developing character. It’s learning opportunities through fieldtrips. It’s arts and crafts. It’s all of us, every opportunity.

ACADEMY (noun)
The noun ACADEMY has 4 senses:

1. a secondary school (usually private)
2. an institution for the advancement of art or science or literature
3. a school for special training
4. a learned establishment for the advancement of knowledge

In our case the “establishment” is our family unit. We believe that learning embodies every area of our lives and we are not bound by the walls of a public school, or the kitchen table. This is a calling. Something we feel strongly that the Lord has lead us to.

My marriage was ordained and set in motion by the Lord.

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

Genesis 2:24

My family was given to me by the Lord, and intended to bring glory and honor to him.

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,”

Ephesians 3:14-15

All humans male and female are created in the image of God. Our children are our responsibility. Children are the heritage of the Lord. Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live.

Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.  Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.”

Psalms 127:3-5

“He must manage his own household well,”

1 Timothy 3:4

Fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness, maintain and strengthen the family, and lead them always to the foot of Christ.

“These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.”

Deuteronomy 6:6-9

We believe the Lord has called us to educate our children. This is a calling that the Lord has placed on our lives. We believe that education happens in all aspects of life, and that the basis of all education should lead children to Christ.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”

Deuteronomy 6:5-7

Beautiful! I really like the name of your blog, it fits so well. I love these reminders too, as I also feel I was called of God to do this. Homeschooling is so much more than "school work". It's life for us as well!
