Ice activity # 2

By now you can tell that our theme this week is ice. I had seen this activity done on several blogs this summer, and thought of a way to adapt it to fit our science lesson.

I hid the letters I, C, E, in a bowl full of water and froze it. When I brought out the ice glacier, I told the kids that I was trying to spell a word and needed there help to find my letters. I told them that they were frozen in the glacier, and that we needed to melt it to get them out. The tried several different ways to melt the ice.

They tried to pick the glacier up and break it. They found out that I was not going to allow this. (lol)

They then decided to sit a wait for it to melt but got impatient. That's when we talked about how heat changes things. They then thought of three different ways to get heat to the ice to "change" it. 1)Breath on the ice (Christopher chose to lick it), 2)Use a hair dryer, 3)Pour hot water on it.

After trying out all of their ideas, they found the letters and spelled the word, ICE.
