FIAR- Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

This Row was a lot of fun, yet somehow I did not end up with very many photo’s We did study a lot of concepts with this book, and there are many more that could be studied. This book was fun for all of my kids. We read it almost daily for two weeks. That never happens, we usually don’t even read it five days in a row.

Bible: Hymn, Being faithful with the small, taking care of our belongings

At Christopher’s request I started doing the Hymns with him again. The Hymn we did to go along with this book id called Our Best. I have actually never heard this hymn and was pleased to find it. Here are the lyrics.

Hear ye the Master’s call, “Give Me thy best!” For, be it great or small, that is His test.
Do then the best you can, not for reward, Not for the praise of men, but for the Lord.

Chorus

Every work for Jesus will be blest, But He asks from everyone his best.
Our talents may be few, these may be small, But unto Him is due our best, our all.

Wait not for men to laud, heed not their slight; Winning the smile of God brings its delight!
Aiding the good and true ne’er goes unblest, All that we think or do, be it the best.

Night soon comes on a pace, day hastens by; Workman and work must face testing on high.
Oh, may we in that day find rest, sweet rest, Which God has promised those who do their best.

We some great discussions about the lyrics of this hymn. It will be in our book for a long time.

Luke 16:10

"Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

In this book Mike Mulligan took such good care of his steam shovel Maryanne that she never grew old. We talked about how this related to taking care of our things. We read Luke 16:10, and talked about how even as a child we can be faithful with small things, like toys. We decided to have a toy wash as a part of taking care of our toys.

Math: 3D Shapes

Mike Mulligan and Maryanne get so carried away digging the square shaped foundation for the town hall that they forget to leave a way out, and find that they are stuck down inside the square.

The foundations that they dug were 3D shapes. So we decided to learn about 3D shapes. First we watched this youtube video.

Then we had a bit of fun building shapes with marshmallows and Toothpicks.

For Fun: Beat the Clock

“Mary Anne could dig as much in a day, as a hundred men could dig in a week.”

We played a fun game of Beat the Clock. The kids had to build a double layer square before the alarm sounded. They loved this game.
