Help!

We have hit a bump in the road. Hailey is so smart and has always excelled in her school work. But the past week she has fought me tooth and nail. She has been acting as though she learned nothing this whole year. The harder I have pushed to get past this, the worse it has gotten. We made some changes and those worked for a while. Is this normal? What do I do?

Hi Angela,

Oh...I'm sorry you've hit a bump. Don't fret though, your daughter is young and it's going to be okay! The best advice I ever got as a new homeschool mom was if we hit bumps in the road, just pull off the road for a little while. I know you probably feel like you have to keep going and keep building momentum, but one of the joys and blessings of homeschooling is being able to back off when we need too.

When my second son was learning three column subtraction, maybe even two column subtraction, he completely forgot all math. It was crazy. But I received that awesome advice mentioned above and I just got him a fun workbook with super easy adding and super easy subtraction problem. You know, basic 10-5 kind of stuff. Then, a couple months later, it might have been as many as 6 months later. We slowly worked back into it and it was much less stressful for both of us. Now my son is a grade ahead in math (though he still struggles with subtraction from time to time). It's really okay to backoff for a while.

Have you ever read any books by Raymond and Dorothy Moore? I highly recommend them as they give you "permission" to wait and "proof" that's it's okay. :o)

Hang in there! Play together. Read books to her. Focus on crafts. Go to the zoo or Children's Museum.

You are a good Momma!
Blessings,
Mrs. Taffy aka Carissa
